NADINE CONDON ANNOUNCES JASON NEWSTED’S PAPA
WHEELIE WILL CLOSE NADINE’S WILD WEEKEND SUNDAY, AUGUST 25
AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HILL
MUSIC II UTILIZING REALNETWORKS “HELIX” TECHNOLOGY
WILL STREAM MUSIC FOR MANY NWW SHOWS
San Francisco, CA – Jason Newsted, who is forever reinventing
his sound, has a new band to debut this year at Nadine’s Wild
Weekend. Newsted’s project – PAPA WHEELIE – is a punk/metal
band that features the former Metallica bassist on lead vocals
and guitar. Newsted debuted the band Echobrain last year at
the closing show of the four-day festival. He will be wrapping
up his second Nadine’s Wild Weekend with another new project,
which is fast becoming an annual tradition. PAPA WHEELIE will
be onstage at the Bottom of the Hill on Sunday, August 25,
9:00pm, 1235 17th St. @ Missouri (in assoc. w/DIW & Future
Farmer Records).
Newsted has taken a special liking to Nadine’s Wild Weekend:
“This event reflects my belief in being inclusive of local
talent which is what I look for when putting together new
bands,” said Newsted. “I am totally committed to supporting
the home-town artists and Nadine gives these players a chance
to be seen by the music industry and fans in a fun, positive
environment. Making music for the right reasons is what motivates
us as musicians in the first place.”
PAPA WHEELIE originally emerged from a mountain biking-based
friendship between Newsted and his friendly neighborhood bike
shop owner Joe Ledesma.Their motto is “Upon the same ground
twice shalt not thy WHEELIE tread!” Roughly translated, whatever
the group plays is totally improvised and has never been played
before and will never be played again. No pre-written material.
Nothing scripted, nothing planned. Simply raw, unadulterated
music from The Chophouse studio as it bleeds. Simply put,
“we just turn the amps up high, the lights down low and let
it rip,” remarks drummer Steven Wiig. For more information
on Chophouse Records check out www.chophouserecords.com.
Another exiting development this year is that much of the
music and content from Nadine’s Wild Weekend will be streamed
using RealNetworks’ proprietary HELIX technology that was
launched just a month ago. Marin-based Music II is utilizing
HELIX, the first comprehensive standard for digital media
delivery that plays any musical file on any system. “It’s
fitting that we have cutting-edge music streamed with cutting-edge
technology and we are thrilled to provide the bands the opportunity
to be seen all over the world,” said Nadine Condon. For more
information on HELIX, go to www.realnetworks.com.

SAN FRANCISCO MUSIC INDUSTRY SHOWCASE OFFERS
OPTIMISM AND COMMUNITY
Papa
Roach, Smashmouth, Third Eye Blind and Stroke 9 Sponsor Nadine's
Wild Weekend
San
Francisco, CA -- As the rest of the music industry is sweating
out another year of lackluster performance and waning enthusiasm,
Nadine Condon is poised to deliver her biggest, most highly
anticipated Nadine's Wild Weekend in her four-year history.
"Regardless
of what the rest of the industry is doing, San Francisco has
a strong tradition of great music and experienced music industry
professionals," says Condon. "This festival is for all of
Northern California to celebrate the decades of world class
rock and roll which continues year after year in spite of
the industry's ups and downs."
This
year heavy-hitting national acts Papa Roach (DreamWorks),
Smashmouth (Interscope), Third Eye Blind (Elektra) and Stroke
9 (Cherry/Universal) have stepped up to give Nadine's Wild
Weekend a nod of accreditation as sponsors. In fact, DreamWorks
Records has seized the opportunity to place Papa Roach's CD,
lovehatetragedy, in the special Nadine's Wild Weekend/LIVE
105/Tower Records sales display that will be up for the month
of August.
"You
have to support the home team," said Patrick Jordan of DreamWorks.
"Nadine's Wild Weekend offers Papa Roach hometown fans the opportunity
to feel that the band is there, supporting them, even though
they are on the road with Eminem and Korn."
Steve Harwell, front man for Smashmouth adds, " The San Francisco
Music scene rocks and so does Nadine's Wild Weekend."
Stephan
Jenkins of Third Eye Blind continues: "The San Francisco bay
area is our creative home and the scene here has been under
attack for years...We want bands, clubs, rehearsal spaces
and a city full of freaks...Nadine's Wild Weekend is a good
chance for the music scene's survival".
Condon
has a lot to be optimistic about. This year's event received
double the number of entries submitted for possible showcase
slots than last year. Additionally, Condon has set up a promotional
program for bands to participate in that offers prominent
CD placement in local Tower Record Stores, ad spots on LIVE
105, advertising exposure in the official Nadine's Wild Weekend
pull out program contained in the August 21 issue of the SF
Weekly, and Website presence on three major radio station
sites. All of this is supported by a full-force outreach to
the national music industry on their behalf.
"It
is more important than ever for artists to have as many business
skills as possible," says Condon. "That's why we have created
a situation where bands can witness and/or participate in
promotions that mirror a major label release. Bands are making
the music, so let's give them the tools to sell their music,
and let's make it fun while we do it."
Along
with showcasing the next crop of talented bands Condon wants
to stimulate the industry's consciousness and remind them
that there are a lot of talented business people here in the
Bay Area that contribute to the overall big music industry
picture and keep their wheels turning even when the chips
are down.
"San
Francisco is a hotbed for music industry professionals who
have made a choice to live here while maintaining an industry-wide
presence," says Condon. "One of the vehicles in which we present
this information to the industry is our "tip sheets" which
highlight our local crop of managers, producers, publicists,
agents, sound designers and game developers in addition to
the bands."
It
is Condon's belief that giving back is part of the cycle of
good business, and Nadine's Wild Weekend is committed to the
support of music-related charities. This year's charity beneficiary
is San Francisco-based Active
Music who will benefit from the sale of the commemorative
"Nadine's Wild Weekend 2002" compilation CD of Wild Weekend
bands, which will be sold at all of the clubs and at participating
Tower Record locations.
Active
Music's mission is to use the power of music to raise sustainable
funding, awareness, and activism for charitable causes and
programs. Members of the Active Music team have successfully
partnered with more than 100 artists to produce over 400 benefit
events attended by more than 1.5 million people, generating
15 million media impressions and raising millions of dollars
for the nonprofit community. In 2001, the team produced three
benefit events that altogether raised over $1.3 million for
nonprofit organizations. (www.activemusic.org).
Nadine's
Wild Weekend hosts over 130 bands in 20 shows in 13 clubs
spanning across 4 days. This year's event is co-produced by
Jocelyn Kane, owner of Motogirl Productions, and Caroline
Rustigian, owner of K-Line Publicity, and presenting sponsors
are BMI, DreamWorks and Provident Financial.
The
full printable schedule for Nadine's Wild Weekend and all
information is currently available.
Luke
Extrykan of Stroke 9 concludes: "Nadine gave us quality showcases
that ultimately garnered us a lot of interest from the music
industry and at the same time was truly a motivational friend.
Nadine's Wild Weekend really supports our community."

Wild
weekend starts Thursday: Looking for the next ``next
big thing''? Nadine Condon sure is. The woman behind San Francisco's
annual ``Nadine's Wild Weekend'' scouts the area for undiscovered
bands and sponsors an annual showcase to get the attention
of record labels.
Last
year, Metallica's Jason Newsted's Echobrain made its debut
at the gathering.
Thursday
night, Condon has a wild scouting party in San Jose at the
Usual, with performances by several bands managed by Smash
Mouth's manager, Robert Hayes.
Heading
the bill is Triple 7, a group that has been promising to break
through for a while. Recently, it added drummer Pat Ruiz and
guitarist Aaron Goodwin, both formerly with Salmon.
Also
on the bill: aggressive rockers the Fighting Jacks; Led Zep-meets-tech
Ones and Zeros (OAZ), Kink-ish rockers Autopunch and world
music explorers Miggs. The show is at 9. Tickets are $8 --
and this is a show not to be missed.

Quotes & About Nadine's Wild Weekend
"Nadine's
Wild Weekend is simply a grand event that goes right to the
heart of why musicians seek a creative outlet.
Condon, year after year, easily understands why she continues
her event. "Even for a jaded old pro like myself, I never
cease to be impressed by the magnetism and excitement from
the bands as I go from club to club and it just reminds me
of why I have to continue doing this year after year. I've
seen so many good bands live that no one has ever heard of
and I always walk away feeling honored that I am able to do
this." from Powerslave.com
5/24/02
"Musicians need to realize that in one way, in
today's marketplace, they have to be career savvy," Condon
concludes. "But if they're not called to it, as a passion,
then all the market savvy in the world is not going to give
you a leg up on writing good music. Because the bottom line
is, the music's got to be there." from Sacto

NADINE
CONDON ANNOUNCES DETAILS OF "WILD NIGHT" SHOWCASES
Sacramento and San Jose Host The Newly Expanded Unsigned
Music Event
Band
Submissions For the August Showcases Continue Through
June 15
San
Francisco, CA - When Nadine Condon, founder and executive
producer of Nadine's Wild Weekend, decided to continue
producing the Summer event that bears her own name,
she wanted it to be "really inclusive" of all Northern
California unsigned rock music talent. This was the
incentive to expand the already 4 nights of local music
to include what she coined "Wild Nights" which are single
showcases in cities outside the Bay Area.
Nadine's
Wild Nights will take place in Sacramento and San Jose,
two towns that have a history of developing label-quality
talent. "First you had the Doobie Brothers and Tesla
- twenty years later you have Cake, Smashmouth, Papa
Roach, Jackpot and Grandaddy," said Condon. "By focusing
on regional talent we can help develop an axis of support
for these new bands. San Francisco may be the hub, but
it's the outlying areas of Northern California that
start the trends."
Both
cities will feature bands prominent in their current
scenes. The Sacramento showcase will take place on May
2 at Old Ironsides, and includes Sacramento Music Award
winners Slow Lorries, Victory Gin, Forever Goldrush
and Las Pesadillas.
The
San Jose Show on May 30 at the Usual features several
bands working with San Jose's powerhouse Sound Management,
including pistol hot Triple Seven and up and comers
The Fighting Jacks, along with Ones and Zeros (OAZ),
Autopunch and Miggs. "When you have a manager like Robert
Hayes take Smashmouth to the top and then continue to
work with local bands, you know the talent pool is deep,"
notes Condon.
Music
submissions from regional bands residing from Monterey
to Chico, Modesto to San Jose, Sacramento to Tahoe and
all of the Bay Area are being accepted through June
15, 2002. To be considered for a spot during the August
Weekend and for the Wild Night showcases, all bands
must apply online at http://www.nadineswildweekend.com.
